Wholesale candy and chocolate by the case: what sells at the register
Candy is the highest-margin square foot in a convenience store, café or gift shop, and the most searched wholesale category after grocery itself. The trick is not finding candy wholesale — it is choosing the twenty SKUs that turn every week instead of the two hundred that sit.
The register mix that works
Three tiers sell together: a mainstream impulse bar, a premium single-origin or ethically-sourced bar with a story on the wrapper, and a snack-size share bag. Better-for-you chocolate — organic, fair-trade, no-sugar-added — now outsells novelty at independent counters in coastal Orange County, and it carries a higher ring.
Seasonal packs (pumpkin spice, peppermint, gingerbread) arrive in August–September and are gone by January. Buy them on the first drop, not the second.
Case packs and shelf life
Chocolate bars come 10–12 to a case, share bags 6–8, minis and bites 8–12. Shelf life on quality chocolate is 9–12 months from production; on gummies and hard candy 12–18 months. A good wholesaler tells you the remaining shelf life on the invoice for anything under 90 days.
Heat is the enemy in a Southern California summer: a case that sits in a van for an afternoon blooms. Our routes run mornings and the vans stay closed; ask any supplier how they handle July.
Pricing by the case
Premium bars wholesale in the $2.50–$4.50 per unit range by the case and retail $4–$7; mainstream bars are lower on both sides. Register placement, not price, decides the sell-through — face the wrapper forward, keep two facings of the top seller, and rotate the seasonal in front.
